Candied Bacon Old Fashioned

Have your bacon and drink it too! A more decadent version of the usual Old Fashioned, this one is fortified with porcine goodness and sure to leave a good impression amongst your house guests. A surefire win to instigating carnivorous conquests.


Makes 1 cocktail

Candied Bacon Old Fashioned

  • 90ml bacon fat-washed Jim Beam bourbon
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • Orange peel
  • Candied bacon

Bacon Fat-Washed Bourbon

  • 8 strips of super fresh streaky bacon
  • 45ml Jim Beam Bourbon

Candied Bacon Garnish

  • Streaky bacon
  • Brown sugar

To Make Bacon Fat-Washed Bourbon

  1. In a dry pan. Grill the bacon strips to render out the fats. Once crispy, set aside the bacon strips for snackage. Meanwhile, deglaze the pan with 45ml of bourbon.
  2. Free the blackened bits from the pan and pour into a bowl to cool down completely before incorporating with the rest of the bourbon.
  3. Leave to ‘fat-wash’ for at least 4 hours in the fridge.
  4. Freeze for 1 hour and then put through a fine sieve layered with a coffee filter.
  5. Dispense the bacon bourbon into a bottle and leave in the fridge.

Candied Bacon Old Fashioned

  1. In a mixing glass, add in your sugar and the 2 dashes of angostura bitters.
  2. Muddle till the sugars have dissolved.
  3. Add a couple of ice cubes and the bourbon and stir till cold.
  4. Strain into a separate glass with a bit piece of ice. Rub the orange peel over the edge of the glass and give a spritz over the top.
  5. Garnish with candied bacon strip and enjoy.

To make Candied Bacon Garnish

  1. Preheat your oven to 190 degrees celsius.
  2. Lay your bacon strips over aluminium foil and sprinkle generously with brown sugar.
  3. Place in the oven to bake for 35 minutes, flipping and covering with more brown sugar halfway through.
  4. Once brown, remove from the oven and lay on a rack to cool down and harden.
