Bob Drops By Singapore

HEALTH-CONSCIOUSNESS CATCHES ON

After welcoming Bob to Singapore, we asked him to share his thoughts on global health and dietary trends around the world.

“Around the world, all of our customers are becoming more health-conscious. There is a greater awareness and thoughtfulness about what we are putting in our bodies and our children’s bodies. We are seeing a shift away from processed foods and towards whole foods,” said Bob. “Folks from all four corners of the Earth are eager for healthful, wholesome foods to give them the energy they need to make the most of their lives!”

Bob expressed his personal excitement about meeting the whole food needs of Singaporean customers as we take our place with enlightened ‘whole foodies’ around the world.

“As new trends emerge from vegan to paleo, you can be sure we have a product to fit your lifestyle,” declared Bob. He added that his company is constantly developing new products and new markets around the world, in accordance with the principle that ‘unprocessed is the process’.

RICE IS NICE, BROWN IS BETTER

We asked Bob for some tips on easy ways to enrich our Asian rice-centric diets. For starters, he suggested switching from white rice to brown rice.

“Once people replace white rice with brown rice, they’ll realise how good they feel afterwards – so much more energised and satiated,” said Bob.

Obviously, Bob is all for cultural exchange. “Our world is globalising and as we all learn about each other’s cultures, I think there is a curiosity and interest in trying new and different foods. We offer an amazing variety of whole grain options. Folks in Asia may even enjoy Bob’s Red Mill whole grain buckwheat, millet, quinoa or spelt with their next meal instead of rice!” suggested Bob.

If you’re not yet ready to farewell rice entirely, Bob suggests mixing whole grains with your rice to boost its nutritional value.

HEALTH IS WEALTH, THE WORLD OVER

When we told Bob that Singaporeans are fond of the saying ‘health is wealth’, we shared a ‘Snap!’ moment when he divulged that he has his own almost identical saying.

“I even have the phrase ‘The Greatest Wealth is Health’ trademarked here in the United States! If you don’t have your health, what do you have?” said Bob.

CUSTOMERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE

When we asked Bob to describe a typical Bob’s Red Mill customer, he told us in the nicest possible way that there is no such person.

“From grandmothers baking cookies for generations beyond their own to youngsters taking a cup of oatmeal as they run out the door to school, and everyone in between, the typical Bob’s Red Mill customer looks like any person walking down the street,” said Bob.

ANCIENT GRAINS MEET MODERN TECHNOLOGY

The story of Bob’s Red Mill is an inspiring one. Having built a whole foods empire on hard work and pure heart, Bob could simply retire and rest on his laurels. But not this Bob, who continues to embrace technology in pursuit of his mission to put whole grains on the table at every mealtime in every household and eatery around the world.

“It’s just unbelievable to sit back and look at how my little flour mill turned into this worldwide company! We have to keep up with the times to get our product to places like Cold Storage, all the way on the other side of the world,” said Bob.

Bob elaborated on some of the many ways in which the company has welcomed modernisation, underlining the fact that technology is only as good as the people who employ and apply it.

“From an internal company photographer who creates images to send to retailers worldwide, to working with export agencies to create package labels that meet international regulations, to top-notch sales people who get the product out there, it’s really about the people that make this company successful,” said Bob.

BOB, A WALKING ADVERTISEMENT

We had to ask the question – what is the secret of Bob’s remarkable constitution, at an age where most of his contemporaries are retired or succumbing to a long list of age- and lifestyle-related ailments.

“People ask me this all the time – “Bob, how do you do it?” They’re amazed that I come to work every day and that I fly around the world meeting customers here and there,” said Bob. “I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I have an insatiable desire to be working, so it’s all I know. But I’ll tell you this. I absolutely start each and every day with a whole grain breakfast that fills me up and gives me the energy I need to be my best day in and day out. I don’t say good food is the medicine for nothing!”

Talking to Bob drove home the fact that he is so much more than an artist’s sketch on the labels of his products. Out of curiosity (and perhaps with a view to making us feel better about ourselves), we prodded him for a confession – what’s his guilty pleasure, his sneaky treat?

“You could ask anyone at the mill and they’ll tell you I have a bit of a sweet tooth for cookies. All things in moderation!” said Bob, reminding us that he is both human and humorous.

Bob is the best possible walking advertisement for his brand. We felt better just talking to him.
