Our Story

Born in Singapore in 1903, we started out as a homegrown merchant of fresh, quality meats and dairy products. From a small cold store to a popular household name and Singaporean icon, we introduced numerous innovative retail concepts including the first supermarket in the 1960s, multiple retailing and bulk buying to bring greater savings to our customers. Cold Storage is also a pioneer in bringing quality and exclusive products from around the world to the well-travelled and the residents of Singapore.

To date, we have 3 brands – Cold Storage, Market Place and Jasons across 53 stores islandwide. Each brand offers unique store concepts and experiences to cater to our diverse consumer needs.

We are part of the Dairy Farm Group, the leading pan-Asian food and drugstore retailer with over 6,100 outlets in the region. Dairy Farm is member of the Jardine Matheson Group, a diversified business group focused principally on Asia with a premium listing on the London Stock Exchange, and secondary listings in the Bermuda and Singapore.

  • 1903
    Singapore Cold Storage Company Limited was registered in Singapore, providing cold storage and distributing frozen beef, mutton, lamb, game, fresh butter, fruit and other Australian food products.
  • 1905
    The first consignment of frozen meats, fresh butter and milk arrived on the S.S.Guthrie of the Burns Philip Line.
  • 1909
    Cold Storage was established in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • 1929
    A 60-acre stretch of forested land along Upper Bukit Timah was purchased by Cold Storage and became the company’s dairy farm.
  • 1930
    Cold Storage entered the bakery business when it acquired the Royal Bakery in Singapore.
  • 1932
    Cold Storage became one of the founding members of the Singapore Manufacturers Association.
  • 1935
    Cold Storage started its delivery system that served all residential districts, starting as early as 6.30am.
  • 1937
    Cold Storage Creameries Limited, a subsidiary, was formed in association with San Miguel of the Philippines and the Magnolia brand ice-cream was introduced.
  • 1945
    After the war, Cold Storage’s ice factories resumed production, reaching full business operations by the end of 1946.
  • 1953
    Cold Storage celebrated its Golden Jubilee. By now, it had a chain of 19 stores in Singapore and Malaya.
  • 1959
    The concept of self-service and supermarket was officially introduced and used in all Cold Storage stores.
  • 1969
    Cold Storage pioneered butter manufacturing at the Magnolia Dairies complex in Bukit Timah.
  • 1972
    Orchard Road Cold Storage pioneered Singapore’s first walk-around, self-service pharmacy.
  • 1978
    Cold Storage celebrated its 75th Anniversary.
  • 1982
    The Company was re-registered as a public limited company known as Cold Storage Holdings PLC.
  • 1983
    Centrepoint Shopping Centre, its first major property development opened for business.
  • 1985
    The Fitzpatricks chain of supermarkets was acquired by Cold Storage.
  • 1987
    The national song, We Are Singapore, sponsored by Cold Storage, was launched to celebrate Singapore’s 22nd birthday.
  • 1989
    Cold Storage took over the 7-Eleven franchise from Jardine Matheson Holdings.
  • 1992
    Bar codes and a scanning system were introduced at all Cold Storage supermarket branches and Cold Storage opened its first heartland store at Northpoint in Yishun.
  • 1993
    Dairy Farm International acquired Cold Storage Supermarkets, Guardian Pharmacy, 7-Eleven and Photo Finish kiosks in Singapore.
  • 1994
    Cold Storage launched its Triple Guarantee programme to assure customers of improved services and better quality products.
  • 1997
    Cold Storage pioneered online supermarket shopping in Singapore with the launch of www.coldstorage.com.sg
  • 1999
    The Company became the first supermarket retailer to open a Fresh Food Distribution Centre, thus ensuring the safe handling and freshness of perishable items.

    Opened the first Giant Hypermarket at IMM to popular acclaim.

    GValue, a new no-frills format store, was introduced at various public housing estates. They incorporated the wet market concept and offered more local and Asian products.

    The We Brighten Up Your Day campaign involving over 5,200 Dairy Farm Singapore team members islandwide was launched and helped to create a working environment that is warm, sincere and helpful.

    Became Singapore’s largest supermarket chain with 75 stores islandwide upon the acquisition of 35 Shop N’ Save stores from QAF and Belgian retailer Delhaize.
